5 Kitchen Remodeling Tips For New Homeowners

If you just purchased a new house and you already know that you don’t want to keep your kitchen the way it is, you may be a bit overwhelmed. There are certainly many ways to improve a kitchen without remodeling, but there are some that just require a complete gut and kitchen remodel.

But how can you be smart about kitchen remodeling? There are so many different options and tips that people will give – and some of those tips are contradicting. Even so, you don’t have to be afraid to explore your options and talk to professionals about what you need.

However, we do have some tips that we suggest for everyone:

Make Sure Your Company Is Qualified

The first thing you want to do is ensure that the company you hire is actually qualified to do the work that you want them to do. There are so many people who prey on those who don’t do their research. You want to ensure that they are licensed, insured, and can legally work on your kitchen. You’d be surprised how many people aren’t and how much they get away with – you can ask for a copy of those licenses.

You may also want to check on some of their previous work. Ask for references and to see examples of what they’ve done. If they cannot provide you with contact information for those references, you may not want to work with them.

Don’t Necessarily Go For Trendy

You want to think about how your kitchen will age. There is something fun about getting a mural dedicated to Salt Bae or a design using different beer bottle caps, but are those necessarily going to age well? You want to think about what will still be beautiful and useful in years to come – if you are remodelling your kitchen now, chances are that you won’t be able to do it again for some time.

Trends, while great, don’t always stick around very long. There were times when everyone needed to have certain backsplashes or finishings, and now they are out of style. Instead, you may want to go with something that is a bit more timeless.

But Do Keep In Mind Resale Value

Even if you just purchased your home, you will probably sell it at some point. You want to ensure that the work you get is not only high quality, but will contribute to the resale value at a later point. This may mean getting some of the trends that won’t go away – such as a kitchen island or a double sink. Think about what you were looking for when you bought your home – and maybe incorporate some of that into what you get now.

As always, this may mean spending a bit more money. If you are flipping a home, spending a little more in the kitchen is always going to be a good idea.

Function Over Style, Always

You want to ensure that you are creating a functional kitchen. There are some design styles that are beautiful, but are they necessarily functional? Unless you have a maid and a chef in your home, you probably cannot get away with having carpeting in the kitchen or scratch-prone white cabinets. Instead, you want to get something that is beautiful but is also functional. The goal isn’t to spend all of your time repairing and cleaning your kitchen, you want to live in it.

An experienced kitchen remodelling company will know all of the tips and tricks to create a kitchen that is beautiful and functional.

Think About How You Will Use Your Kitchen Into The Future

If you are a new homeowner and plan on staying in your home for some time, it is likely that your family will grow and change. Think about how your kitchen will be used into the future – if you are going to have kids while you live here, you will want a kitchen that looks a certain way in comparison to a kitchen that will be used when you enter retirement.

No matter what, remember that your kitchen is going to be the center of your home, so you want to give it the respect and time that it needs.
